Village of SGang Gwaay

Within the boundaries of Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Reserve and Haida Heritage Site remain the village of SGang Gwaay (once known by its English name "Ninstints"). What survives today is indeed remarkable; a long-uninhabited 19th-century Haida community where the ruins of longhouses and mortuary poles strikingly illustrate the cultural tradition, mythology and art of Haida Society.

SGang Gwaay boasts the largest collection of Haida totem poles in their original locations, many celebrated as highly regarded works of art. UNESCO formally designated SGang Gwaay with World Heritage Status in 1981, recognizing the monumental carved cedar poles to be "among the finest examples of their type in the world". As per accepted Haida tradition, they are being allowed to succumb to the natural decay caused by the Island's lush rainforest climate.

Located on Anthony Island, SGang Gwaay is extremely remote, and access is only by water or aircraft from departure points in the northern part of Haida Gwaii. Daily tourist numbers are carefully restricted to prevent damage caused by excessive foot traffic.

A four-person minimum required for reservations.
