The Mosquito Pole

an ancient Haida village site on the south-western shore of Chaatl Island

The village of Ts’aa.ahl (pronounced “Joth”, once known as Chaatl) was known to have 35 houses and 561 residents at time of contact, but more were said to have existed before much was destroyed by fire in 1878. Ts’aa.ahl was settled by both Raven and Eagle families from Pebble Town (near HlGaagilda Skidegate). The village had a prominent chief in the 1850s named Wadatstaia who was known to non-Haida as Captain Gold.

Today Ts’aa.ahl is known for its two standing house frontal poles, the “Mosquito Pole” is the largest. Located on the east side of the village, it faces the long-abandoned village site of Niisii, located on the other side of Buck Channel.The second pole (Eagle Pole) is only a short walk from the beach.
